Put the tire onto the rim. Using
a tire iron or a straight (smooth end) steel rod and a large hammer, insert
the rod into the inside of the tire through one bead and pound on the inside
of the bead on the opposite side of the tire. What you are trying to do is
get one bead partially "stuck" to the rim from the inside. Pound all around
the bead so it sticks evenly. Next, carefully turn the tire and rim over and
put on top of a 4x4 wooden block so that the "open" end of the bead is down.
Now air up the tire. With one bead stuck (slightly pounded on) and the tire
upside down with gravity helping the open bead, the tire will usually air up.
It helps to remove the stem valve and sometimes to use the air hose coupling
directly (no air chuck). I've used this technique for sand tires and off-road
dirt tires and it works every time ... a lot safer than ether.
